Filled with Sexual Thoughts: Part 2
Question: Why is there a constant preoccupation with sex, anger, hatred and revenge?
"A worldly-minded person is a prey to sexual thoughts, and thoughts of hatred, anger and revenge. He is enslaved by these two type of thoughts which take possessions of his mind. He does not know the laws of thoughts, and how to divert his mind, and fix it on good, noble thoughts. He cannot resist an evil desire, craving or temptation on account of his weak will. He is completely ignorant of the nature and workings of the mind. His position is extremely deplorable, despite his earthly possessions and knowledge obtained from universities. Dispassion and discrimination have not awakened in him. He has no faith in saints, in scriptures and in God...." (pg. 355, Science of Yoga, Vol. 2 by Swami Sivananda)
Question: Can't we wear off the sexual feeling by indulging in it once and for all?
"When any sexual act is repeated very often, the desire becomes very keen and strong. The sexual instinct or the reproductive instinct in a man involuntarily prompts him for sexual acts for the preservation of his species... Passion...arises ...when Rajo-guna predominates.. Avidys Shakti has taken the form of passion for keeping up the Lila of the Lord." (pg. 346-347, How to Cultivate Virtues and Eradicate Vices by Swami Sivananda)
Question: To what extent is it true that sexual activity can be detrimental to our health and life?
Answer: "Ayurveda stresses maintaining the health and vitality of the reproductive system. This is not simply to allow or a better sex life. It is to afford greater vitality for the body As a whole, and for the nervous system, specifically... most diseases are based upon or involve some wrong use of sexual energy, as sexual energy is the primary energy of the body and mind....abstinence (from sex) is valuable in treating mental and nervous system disorders as the sexual fluid lubricates and nourishes the nerve tissue." (pgs. 191, 192, Ayurvedic Healing by Dr. David Frawley)
Question: Ancient scriptures and medical books have strongly advised men to preserve their semen, and in this regard, have discouraged them from losing semen other than for purposes of reproduction. Are there any such prohibitions for women?
Answer: "(Someone has recently asked) whether the same theory regarding the formation of Veerya (=the vital force) and loss of it holds good in the case of women also, whether they are actually affected to the SAME extent as men.
"The question is an important and pertinent one. Indulgence in the sexual act is exhausting to the FEMALE system and a DRAIN upon her vitality as in man. The nervous strain it imposes on her systems is VERY GREAT indeed.
"The female gonads---the ovaries corresponding to the testes in the males---produce, develop and mature the precious, vital force like the semen. This is the ovum. Although the woman does not actually lose this out of her body, as in the case of the semen in men, yet, due to the sexual act, it leaves the ovaries and is taken up in the process of conception to form embryo. And, one only knows too well what a strain and drain child-bearing is on the vitality and strength of the women.
"REPEATED depletion of this force and state strain of childbirth makes wrecks of healthy women, works havoc on their strength, beauty and grace, as well as on their youth and mental power. The eyes lose their lustre and sparkle.
"The intense excitement of the sexual act SHATTERS the nervous system, and causes DEBILITY too. The system of females being more delicate and high-strung, they are often more affected than men.
"Women SHOULD, therefore, preserve this precious force. The ovum and the hormones secreted by the ovaries are very ESSENTIAL for the maximum physical and mental well-being of women." (pgs. 130-131, Science of Yoga, Vol. 7, by Swami Sri Dr. Sivananda Maharaj of Rishikesh)
Question: What is wrong in indulging in something that Nature has given us?
"He who is subject to his passions is the WORST slave on the surface of this earth." (pg. 177, "How to Cultivate Virtues & Eradicate Vices" by Swami Sivananda)
Sri Swami Satchidananda: "The seminal fluid gives strength and stamina to the brain and nerves. Nervous debility is caused by a lack of stamina because it has all been drained away... Conserve sexual energy in women also gets transformed..." (pg. 138, The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali)
"That man in whom the sex-idea is deep-rooted can never dream of understanding Vedanta and realising Brahman even within one hundred crores of births." (pg. 268 Self-Knowledge by Swami Sivananda)
"As soon as the FIRST thought of sex enters the mind, that is the time to catch it. However tempting it seems now, once you are out of it you will see it is the greatest delusion. Paramahansa Yogananda (pg. 282 of Conversations with Yogananda)
"The ANGRY man, the SEXUAL man, the GREEDY man forgets his own position, and his relations with society, and commits GREAT blunders that RUIN his life and the LIVES of OTHERS. Many of these MENTAL alcoholics think that if they give expression to their psychological habits, they will feel somewhat RELIEVED. But the self-indulgent habit of GIVING IN TO harmful impulses is EXTREMELY pernicious, for it is by REPETITION of such evil expressions that a person becomes a chronic MENTAL alcoholic, making a FOOL of himself anytime and anywhere," Paramahansa Yogananda (pg 181---A False Conception---Man's Eternal Quest)
