Nothing Happens in Japa/Chanting?

Question: I have been repeating my mantra for a few months, but nothing seems to be happening. What is wrong?

Swami Muktananda: Nothing is wrong. Keep repeating the mantra. When something is supposed to happen, it will happen. Your main duty is to focus your attention, and to make sure that the mantra is going on in you. Your attention should not go to that place where you imagine that something should be happening but is not. The Bhagavad Gita asks us to perform good deeds constantly. Never think  about when your deeds are going to bear fruit or what fruits they are going to bear.

Somebody once said to the great yogini, Rabi'a, "O, Rabi'a, you are constantly moving your japa mala. Do you ever have any experience.?"

She replied, "It does not matter whether or not I am having any experience. It does not matter as long as He experiences that i am repeating His Name." So, repeat the mantra very quietly. (pg. 174, From the Finite to the Infinite by Swami Muktananda)
